What the yard needed
The homeowners had an above ground pool and a temporary ladder. Getting in and out meant climbing, and there was nowhere to sit, stage towels or keep an eye on kids in the water.
The ground also fell away from the house, so anything we built had to be raised and properly footed rather than set on blocks.
Framing it right
We laid the deck out to the pool radius, dug footings below frost line and set pressure-treated posts on galvanized bases. Beams, joists and blocking were sized so the deck sits level with the pool rail with no bounce underfoot.
The deck edge was scribed to the curve of the pool wall so the gap stays consistent all the way around instead of leaving a wedge at one end.
Railing, stairs and access
A full perimeter railing with evenly spaced balusters closes the deck in, and a wide stair run with its own handrail brings you up from the yard onto a landing at the ladder.
The finished deck turned the pool into a place the family actually spends time, not just a thing they climb into.
After
The finished house
The pool finally feels like part of the yard instead of something sitting in it.
